Starting Info CrossFit Games 2011

What is this all about? This blog documents the progress of the Iron Major Affiliate team for 2011. The team's objective is to qualify for the 2011 CrossFit games finals held in Jul 2011 in California.

The purpose of Iron Major CrossFit's participation is three fold:

-         -  Provide focus and team environment to improve individual performance;
-         - Build small teams; and
-         - Enhance awarenss of CF in Leavenworth commutity

To this end our approach should be inclusive of all Iron Major and CrossFit Results members. This will give us the capacity to consider two teams because the rule is one team per affiliate but there are no restrictions on who is in the team provided you workout in the same gym.

The games occur in three phases:

Lead up and Sectionals. The sectionals were will be mid Feb in MO. There is no team comp in sectionals. However, I suggest we use the sectionals to compete as individuals in order to: understand how the games work, get some training in “games intensity WOD” and let individuals work out if its what they want to do – some may even wish to keep competing as individuals if they make the regionals

Regionals. In CO at the end of Apr. There is a team competition at Regionals. There are six members in a team (no more than four from either sex), but each WOD only requires four members, this allows athletes to be subbed before WOD's to maximise the team strengths. If you want to know more then read the  Affiliate Cup Rules.

Some workouts from the 2010 regional are here so you can understand how it works and the standards.

Finals.  The finals are held in CA in Jul. We can talk more about that if we get there.

Costs.   I will be seeking sponsorship and support from the CGSC foundation.

If you have ideas, suggestions, comments etc please post to comments.

  1. Looking forward to this...wondering if we'll have separate, "team" WODs to get us there.

Though, I'd have to say...competing at Regionals will definitely be interesting/challenging if they are again held in Denver. (Given the explosion of CrossFit, though, they might have to split the US into even more regions...just MY thoughts.) I'd be willing to say that the athletes from high altitudes (who regularly train at those altitudes) DEFINITELY have an edge over those of us closer to sea-level. And given our schedules, it's not like we can go out there two weeks (or even one week) early to acclimate.

Having said that...FRIGGIN' BRING IT. Don't make excuses. Kill the WOD.

Get those Muscle Ups, those handstand pushups, and those pistols ready, boys (and girls).

Anyone know how we can get some sleds added to the Bubble Gym? Those were in heavy use last year at many sectionals, and they're a GREAT workout. (Of course, since they were big last year, it probably means they won't be this year.)

  2. Dave, I have a good sled that I can bring for the WODs. It's a Muscle Driver Power Sled http://www.muscledriverusa.com/mdposlwadha.html

  4. Probably important to note that those dates for competitions are based on the 2010 games. While the finals will def be in July, the sectionals and regionals could be at different times and places.

  5. Good point Dave. I suspect that we won't hear anything from CFHQ until the New Year.

  6. As I am likely not the guy to actually compete unless I can carry the load with double unders, I figured I could help "manage" (God do I feel like the little dude in high school wanting to be part of the football team!) Regardless, watching film may help with form, etc. If you guys want, I can bring my DVD camera in and record some WODs, etc, etc. Thoughts??

  7. Rich - great idea.

However, don't sell yourself short. The games are a bit away yet.

For instance, while I probably have an advantage over a lot of our folks in rowing, power and/or strength (in terms of lower body) right now, I know that my metcon times (stamina/endurance) and upperbody strength (and all of the stuff that goes along with that -to include pullups, muscleups, overhead work, and HSPU) are definitely lacking right now.

Also, we all need our rabbitt to chase through the workouts, whether it be me chasing you on double unders or you "chasing" me on a deadlift workout.

So, anyway, yes, great idea on the camcorder. But don't think that you won't be good enough come competition time. (Remember, Ollie won that game for Hickory High, manager or no.)

  8. Now that we have an idea on when the workouts will open up, we should give some thought to who/ how/ where we validate, or are we thinking we film all and send in for validation?

  9. Rich - more information is forthcoming on how an affiliate can validate. Bottom line is that we won't need to videotape every workout.

One option is to have a dedicated day that we do the Games WOD, just like for the XFL WODs. Assuming it fits into the rules, we'd have to have at least one L1 around in the afternoons for anyone in the afternoon crowd who is wishing to participate. (My conjecture is that there will probably need to be a L1 trainer there BESIDES the one submitting to "validate." In other words, no one can "validate" themself. Again, that's just my conjecture.)
